Effects in Horror

These are the three effects that horror works usually have on us. Sometimes masterfully used to engage us, other times lousily so. And depending on the mood, we may seek and enjoy one over another.

Now, let’s see what they’re essentially about.

 Tension
This may slowly or rapidly build up. Through conflict, restraint, concern, and other unresolved matters that keep you unsettled and maybe even stiff in your seat. You’re unsure what will happen and what will happen can significantly impact things for better or for worse.

 Chills
They go down your spine, under your skin. Maybe subtly but undeniably, it has gotten to you on a deep level. You may feel slightly shaken from the inside, as if something within you was touched and moved. And you may shudder and try to shake it off afterward, but something may remain.

 Startles
Also known as jump scares. Love them or hate them, call them a cheap trick or a cleverly timed and introduced one. They will catch you by surprise, possibly even cause you to scream, until you figure out when to expect them and how to be unaffected by them. But even then, some can still sneak up on you.
